Today’s girls can’t let it go when it comes to their passion for the 2 Norweign princesses that star in Disney’s movie “Frozen.”
Barbie is no longer the most popular toy that parents imagine to buy for their daughters, the first time that the iconic doll did not win the National Retail Federation’s holiday “Top Toys” survey in its eleven-year history. Instead, “Frozen” products are reigning supreme, with the survey finding 1 in 5 parents plan to buy Disney’s “Frozen” products. That topped the closely 17% that expect to buy Barbies.
As Fortune reported, sales of “Frozen” toys, games, shirts and more products hit $1 billion in the USA alone this year, observers guesstimate — an astounding sum for gear tied to film was released just a several years ago. Industry experts say “Frozen,” a film that emphases on the relationship of two sisters, is one of the hottest toy possessions that industry has seen in a last decade.
The survey’s results also highlight the challenges that Barbie faces as the decades-old doll viewpoints to resonate with modern girls. Barbie’s sales dropped 21% in the third quarter from a several years ago, hitting Barbie on track to report descending sales for the third consecutive year.

Retailers and toy manufacturers were caught off guard by the “Frozen” madness in previous years, leading to some supply deficiencies and angry parents to take to social media to vent their frustration when they couldn’t find the princess dolls in their neighborhood stores. But retailers say they are better equipped today to meet demand.
“We have over three hundred items to choose from,” said Toys ‘R’ Us Principal Merchandising Officer Richard Barry. He said the shop was working “tough to make sure we have supply every day for the season, but there is a big collection. We feel great about our position.”
For now, Mattel (MAT, -1.74%) benefits from request for both “Frozen” and Barbie, as the toy manufacturer makes many of Disney’s “Frozen” dolls. But Mattel earlier lost the selling rights to make the dolls based on Disney’s (DIS, +0.15%) Princess belongings, a partnership that rival Hasbro (HAS, +0.60%) took over in 2016.
